name-dropper, that’s me

The Mudville Gazette, that bastion of milblogging, is questioning the nomination of Christopher Hill as ambassador to Iraq:

Should the US Ambassador to Iraq speak Arabic? Should he have Middle Eastern experience? Should he have deep background in working with the military in counterinsurgency operations?

Would two out of three “yes” answers be enough?

How about zero for three?

There’s more to the post than that, of course, like some discussion of Hill’s work in the Balkans which might be quite valuable in Iraq. Hill also led the six-party talks on North Korean disarmament, so he has some experience bringing hostile factions together.

However, that’s not why I’m posting about this. I’m posting about this because I had dinner with Under Secretary Hill recently (along with a bunch of other people) and his take on the situation with North Korea was quite interesting. He is very intelligent, funny, and seemed friendly in the midst of a bunch of grad students.

Interestingly, he said he likes G.W. Bush, that he is a good man who made mistakes in his first term and worked hard to fix them in his second.

None of this has anything to do with whether or not he’s the right choice for ambassador to Iraq, but that question’s above my pay grade.

Carry on.
