Had Enough Therapy?

An interesting blog from a life coach. His most recent instalaunched post is The Hotness Gap, after which a few genuine he-man woman-haters come out in the comments, but it is a good post none-the-less.

To his point that hotness affects election results, so do sports results, apparently.

Happy Friday the 13th!

Do you have paraskavedekatriaphobia?  How silly!  As for me, it’s paraskavedekatriafilia all the way.

Wikipedia has an interesting history of this particular phobia, claiming it really only started a couple of centuries ago, and About.com also has a good article on it.  Some interesting thoughts from there:

Friday has considered bad luck by some because Jesus was crucified on Friday.  13 has been considered an unlucky number because it comes after 12, an allegedly perfect number, marring it in some way.  Apparently, in some places there is a superstition that if 13 people eat together, one of them will die, which may go back to the Last Supper, or to Norse mythology.

But the truth of it all is, no one seems to know why Friday the 13th became considered an unlucky day, and around here, it is like a second Christmas.  So Happy Friday the 13th!  I hope you’re having a good one!  Me?  I’m celebrating it in the traditional fashion with friends after work.

Henry and Dorothy Allingham

Posted in Salutations with tags , , on July 20, 2009 by lumpy

Everyone seems to be quoting Mr. Allingham’s joke that the secret to his longevity (113 years of it) was “cigarettes, whisky and wild, wild women.”

What only the Guardian notes, which makes the above quote all the funnier and, in my opinion, Mr. Allingham’s life even more poignant, was another quote of his: “I’ve only ever kissed one girl: my Dorothy,” he said. “We met in 1915 and married in 1918. She died in 1970.”

That too made him a rare and noble soul.

Godspeed, Mr. Allingham.

no post for you today, naughty people

Posted in Salutations with tags on March 22, 2009 by lumpy

I’ve decided you’ve all been naughty and so there will be no post here today, and you will also receive no butter for the post you aren’t having.

I hope this teaches you a lesson and that you’ll be more mature in your dealings with the intertubes in the future.

happy recovery-from-st.-patty’s-day day

I’m on the mend. You?

I had a pint at John Harvards called the Black Watch Stout, which was described as in the tradition of Irish stouts. Whoever named that either, one, belongs on Obama’s foreign policy team, or two, really belongs on our foreign policy team for UK / Ireland.

My first thought was, the Black Watch is a Scottish regiment, silly rabbit. This is why the one who named / described it should be on Obama’s team. With insults so far to Britain (what special relationship?) and Brazil, and errors with Russia (over-charge us!) and Ireland, it just makes sense.

Then I did a little snooping around, and found that The Black Watch is the name of an Irish rebel song, and so now I think maybe, just maybe, the guy who wrote the description might well be a very subtle player indeed.

Anyway, hope you had a good one!
